Only Jesus can truly satisfy us. Nothing on earth can do what only He can! He is the One who fills us and gives our lives meaning and purpose! He is our Rock and our Refuge! Only Jesus gives us real peace, joy, and hope! He is and should be our greatest Treasure and pure Delight!
I was recently contemplating these things when I had a grand epiphany. The good Lord helped me to understand how all of the idols of our hearts are ultimately pointing to what a right relationship with Jesus should look like. This may seem confusing, so let me explain. An idol of our heart is anything that we put before our relationship with Jesus, and we are longing for so much that we are willing to sin to get it, or we sin if we do not get it. This may be comfort, control, acceptance, ease, peace, etc.
However, all of these things are ultimately fulfilled in a proper relationship with Jesus. For those of us who have put our faith and trust in Christ, all these things that we are longing for are already ours in Christ. We just must learn to embrace these truths and be willing to find them in Christ instead of sinful worldly ways. If I am longing for the acceptance of others and fearing their rejection, I need to look to Christ, because in Christ, I am fully accepted by Him! He will never reject me! He is with me always! He sees me, even when it seems like no one else does. If I am idolizing comfort and dreading anything uncomfortable, I need to run to Jesus, because He is my God of all comfort! He wants to comfort me in my affliction and through the hard times that I face. In Him, I can be comforted even when life is rocky and uncomfortable.
If I am clamoring after the approval of others, I need to remember that I already have God’s approval and that when He looks at me, He sees Jesus and His righteousness. Therefore, I am considered righteous in the eyes of God. It really does not matter what others think of me. If I am striving for peace as the world around me is not peaceful, I need to go to Jesus, casting all my anxieties on Him and looking for things to be thankful for. When I do this, He promises to fill me with His peace that surpasses all understanding!
If I desire control and want to control everyone and everything around me, I need to realize that I don’t have control. But God has complete control over everything and is working all things out for good. Therefore, I can learn to trust Him, even when life is going differently than I want it to. With all that being said, I want to encourage all of you to run to Jesus! Instead of pursuing the idols of your hearts, be willing to repent of trying to find those things apart from Christ. Be willing to learn how to find all those things in a deep and thriving relationship with Christ. This is what will truly satisfy your soul!
“For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He fills with good things.” Psalm 107:9
